Janjira Fort Expected To Reopen For Tourists By End Of September
Murud, September 9, 2025:Â The famous Janjira Fort, which remains closed every year during the monsoon for safety reasons, is likely to reopen for tourists by the end of September. The Archaeological Department has already begun preparations after repeated demands from visitors and locals, as reported in Maharashtra Times.Â
Passenger boat services to the fort are suspended annually from June 1 to August 31 due to rough seas. With rainfall subsiding and wind speeds reducing in Murud taluka, officials expect smooth ferry operations this season. However, the reopening depends on cleaning and restoration work inside the fort.

According to Assistant Conservator B.G. Yelikar, it will take at least 10–15 days to clear overgrown vegetation and carry out repairs. Due to Ganeshotsav in Konkan, labourers are in short supply, but the department aims to complete internal cleaning by September 20.
Local families dependent on Rajpuri’s sailboats and motorboats, who face economic hardship during the closure, are hopeful for an early reopening. The resumption of tourism will also restore employment for boatmen and revive nearby businesses.
Authorities have assured that once the cleaning is completed, Janjira Fort will be opened promptly, bringing relief to both tourists and the local economy.
