What was supposed to be a normal morning turned into a nightmare for the Amin family when 22-year-old Sanskruti Amin lost her life in a horrific and preventable incident in Jogeshwari. As she stepped out of her home for work on Wednesday morning, a loose brick from the 19th floor of an under-construction building struck her fatally — a tragedy that has now sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice across the city and online.

Sanskruti, a young banking professional and the only child of her parents, was walking through a narrow lane near the construction site in Meghwadi when the incident occurred. The site, part of a slum redevelopment project undertaken by Shraddha Lifestyle LLP, reportedly had inadequate safety measures — a flimsy net meant to catch falling debris failed to stop the heavy brick from plunging down.

Shaken residents and eyewitnesses have described the scene as heartbreaking. Many of them have long complained about safety lapses at the site, but their concerns went unheeded. The aftermath has left the local community not just grieving, but demanding real answers and legal consequences.

Leading the charge is the Billawar Association, a cultural group representing Sanskruti’s community. The organisation has launched a campaign titled ‘Justice for Sanskruti Amin’, which has gained momentum online and offline. Their message is clear: what happened was not an unfortunate accident — it was criminal negligence, and those responsible must be held accountable.

“Sanskruti’s life was full of promise. Her death is not something we can just move on from,” said Uday Salian, vice-chairman of the association’s Jogeshwari unit. “We will continue to fight. Her life mattered.”

The organisation has also planned a candlelight gathering at the site of the tragedy on Sunday morning, inviting the public to join in remembrance and solidarity.

On the legal front, there has been growing frustration. Friends of the Amin family revealed that Sanskruti’s father, Anil Amin — a small business owner who runs a catering service — had to spend hours at Meghwadi police station just to get the necessary procedures moving. They allege that the police delayed the filing of a First Information Report (FIR), adding to the family’s distress.

Eventually, the Meghwadi police registered a case against Shraddha Lifestyle LLP under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and Section 3(5) for common intent. However, no arrests have been made so far, and the company’s directors are yet to be questioned.

Senior police inspector Sudhakar Humbe confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and further action will be taken after evidence is reviewed. Meanwhile, construction work at the site has been ordered to stop until all proper safety measures are verified and implemented.

Leaders of the Billawar Association have also approached Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athavale, urging him to step in and ensure justice is served. They have specifically called for the arrest of builder Bhavesh Sanghrajka, one of the key figures behind the redevelopment project.
