‘Kohinoor Ka Badla’: Indian Tourists Leaves ₹10 in Donation Box at British Museum

The viral moment highlights colonial irony as netizens mock the museum for asking donations despite housing stolen treasures.

A recent viral video has sparked laughter and reflection across social media after an Indian visitor dropped a ₹10 note less than one British pound, into the donation box at London’s British Museum. The act, both symbolic and humorous, was captioned with the cheeky line: “Kisine Kohinoor ka badla le liya, guys”, meaning, “Someone finally took revenge for the Kohinoor.”

The British Museum, long criticized for showcasing artifacts acquired during colonial times, including India’s famed Kohinoor diamond, recently drew more attention for encouraging visitors to donate £5 each to support its work. In the video, the Rs 10 note is clearly visible inside the box that reads, “Welcome to the British Museum. Suggested donation £5. Every & helps the Museum’s work.”

The internet was quick to respond. Comments poured in with biting wit:

  • “The journey from stealing to begging,” said one.
  • “Stole from the whole world and now asking for donations — only the British can do that,” wrote another.
  • “So now they owe us ₹45 trillion and ₹10,” one user added sarcastically.
  • Others called the unknown donor a “legend” and joked that the act was carried out “on purpose.”

The moment resonated deeply with many who see the Kohinoor’s continued display in the UK as emblematic of unacknowledged colonial wrongs. Although the UK government has never officially promised to return the Kohinoor, UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy earlier this year acknowledged ongoing talks with India about potential cultural cooperation and shared heritage.

For many, however, the Rs 10 gesture says it all, a small but loud act of protest from a nation still waiting for reparations.
