Know the exact date, significance, rituals, and auspicious timings for this sacred night

Sharad Purnima, observed on the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashwin, holds immense religious significance. In 2025, Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on October 6, beginning at 11:02 am. The Purnima Tithi will end on October 7 at 1:37 pm. This auspicious night is also known as Ashwin Purnima, Kojagari Purnima, and Raas Purnima.

According to Hindu scriptures, on this night the moon rises in its complete glory with all sixteen kalas (divine qualities), making the moonlight nectar-filled and healing. It is believed that food items, especially milk and kheer, kept under the moonlight absorb these divine properties. Consuming them brings health benefits, freedom from diseases, and long life.

Significance of Sharad Purnima

On this night, the moon is closest to the Earth, and its rays are considered to carry medicinal and divine powers. Devotees prepare kheer and place it under the moonlight, believing it becomes nectar-like. Consuming this kheer is said to eliminate physical ailments and bring peace and prosperity. Sharad Purnima is also dedicated to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu, seeking blessings for wealth, fortune, and well-being.

Rituals and Pooja Vidhi

On the morning of Sharad Purnima, devotees begin with a holy bath and clean their homes. The worship space is sanctified with Ganga water. A clean red or yellow cloth is spread on a wooden platform, and idols or images of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu are placed on it. Offerings include incense, lamps, lotus flowers, sweets, and white garments for the goddess. At night, kheer is prepared and placed in the courtyard or rooftop under the moonlight, absorbing the divine nectar of the moon.
