A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale shook the region of Kolhapur in Maharashtra on Wednesday, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The seismic activity occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers below the surface.

The tremors were detected precisely at 06:45:05 Indian Standard Time (IST), marking the moment when the ground movement was felt by residents in the area. The NCS emphasized that the earthquake’s epicenter was situated at a depth of 5 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

An official announcement from the NCS’s verified X handle shared the following information: “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.4, Occurred on 16-08-2023, 06:45:05 IST, Latitude: 17.19 & Longitude: 73.79, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.”

On August 11, an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck the region located 112 kilometers SSE of Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The NCS reported that this previous earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface, and its tremors were experienced at 02:56:12 IST.
