Ustad Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla maestro and composer, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the age of 73. Hussain had been battling health issues related to his heart and blood pressure.

Earlier on Sunday, the maestro was admitted to the ICU of a San Francisco hospital due to heart complications, as confirmed by his friend and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia. Hussain’s manager, Nirmala Bachani, revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for heart-related problems over the past two weeks.

A Global Icon of Indian Classical Music

Born into a family of musical excellence as the eldest son of Ustad Allah Rakha, Zakir Hussain carved his own legacy as one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians. Spanning over six decades, his illustrious career saw him winning five Grammy Awards, including three at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year.

In 1973, Hussain collaborated with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist T.H. ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram, pioneering a fusion of Indian classical music with jazz that captivated global audiences.

His contributions were recognized with the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023, cementing his place as a cultural icon of India.
