A seven-year-old boy was killed in a leopard attack on Friday night in Mandavgan Pharata village of Shirur taluka, Pune district. The victim, Vansh Rajkumar Singh, was attacked near a sugarcane field around 10:30 pm.

Vansh’s family had moved from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh to work in a jaggery production unit in Shirur. On Friday night, following a dispute between his parents, Vansh left their makeshift home near the field. While he was walking towards the sugarcane field, the leopard grabbed him by the neck and dragged him into the field.

The factory manager informed the police after the attack. Vansh’s father raised an alarm and tried to follow the animal but lost track due to waterlogged fields. Police reached the spot soon after and, during a search operation, found the boy’s body about 100 meters into the field. He had deep wounds on his neck, legs, and arms, indicating a fatal leopard attack.

The forest department has since set up 12 trap cages, six cameras, and drone surveillance to catch the leopard. Ten rescue professionals are working throughout the day, with six stationed at night. However, efforts to capture the animal have been hampered by disturbances in the field.
