Leopard Captured in Shirur After Killing 5-Year-Old Girl; Fear Still Grips Villagers
The Forest Department traps one leopard after a tragic attack in Pimparkhed, but locals fear more big cats are roaming nearby.
The Forest Department has successfully captured a leopard responsible for the horrifying attack that killed a five-year-old girl in broad daylight at Pimparkhed village, Shirur taluka.
The animal was trapped in one of the 11 cages set up after the incident, which has left the local community shaken and fearful.
The victim, identified as Shivnya Shailesh Bombe, was carrying water for her grandfather, Arun Devaram Bombe, who was ploughing a field behind their house when the leopard pounced from a nearby sugarcane field and dragged her inside.
Her grandfather fought bravely, managing to rescue the child from the leopard’s grip, but she succumbed to her injuries before treatment at the sub-district hospital in Manchar.
Following the tragedy, former Cooperation Minister Diliprao Valse Patil and former MP Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil visited the hospital to meet the grieving family and gather details.
Officials said the captured leopard is the second one trapped in two days, suggesting an increasing presence of big cats in the area.
Villagers from Pimparkhed, Jambut, and Chandoh — where this marks the seventh fatal attack in recent months — are living in constant fear.
Residents have urged the Forest Department to capture all leopards roaming in nearby fields and forested areas and to implement long-term safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
