Leopard Sighting, Bird Hazards, and Traffic Snarls: Pune Airport Issues Discussed
Pune, July 17, 2025: A crucial review meeting was held at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) headquarters today to address multiple issues concerning Pune International Airport. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram chaired the meeting, which included officials from the airport authority, Indian Air Force, police, forest department, and representatives from various social organizations.
The meeting focused on recent incidents, including the sighting of a leopard on the airport runway, increased bird activity in the vicinity, and persistent traffic congestion around the airport.
In response to the leopard sighting, forest officials have installed cages and barricades at entry points and areas where the animal could hide. Measures were also discussed to ensure such intrusions are prevented in the future.
Additionally, authorities identified 11 garbage dumping spots near the airport that attract birds, creating risks for aircraft operations. Immediate action has been ordered to clean these areas and prevent any food sources for animals and birds within the airport vicinity.
To address traffic bottlenecks, traffic police have been instructed to create a detailed action plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement and avoid congestion near the airport approach roads.
Municipal Commissioner Ram emphasized, “Ensuring safe and uninterrupted flight operations is our top priority. All departments have been directed to implement necessary measures without delay.”
Airport Director Santosh Doke, Air Force officials, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav, forest officers, and others attended the meeting.
