Doctors warn that smoking while drinking tea doubles the risk of esophageal cancer and strains the heart

The popular ‘chai-sutta’ pairing may be deeply ingrained in India’s social culture, but health experts warn that this combination can have serious long-term consequences. According to doctors, consuming cigarettes and tea together significantly increases the risk of esophageal cancer, along with other health issues like heart disease, lung damage, and stomach ulcers.

A 2023 report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that drinking very hot tea can damage esophageal cells, and when paired with smoking, it can double the risk of cancer. The combination also exerts strain on the heart and lungs, forcing them to work harder than usual.

While tea alone offers mild stimulation and alertness, and cigarettes provide nicotine-induced relaxation, together they create a deceptive sense of relief. The overlapping stimulant effects raise blood pressure, increase heart rate, and heighten physiological stress. Over time, this cycle strengthens dependency on both caffeine and nicotine.

Experts note that nicotine temporarily reduces withdrawal symptoms, while caffeine boosts alertness, creating a short-lived high. However, when their effects wear off, people experience cravings, irritability, and anxiety, reinforcing the addiction loop.

Doctors caution that this habit not only worsens acid reflux and sleep disturbances but can also contribute to heart palpitations, chronic lung disease, and cancer with prolonged use.
