Pune Awaits Centre’s Nod For 61km Metro Expansion Under Phase II
Pune: To ensure a hassle-free commute between homes and metro stations, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) is set to introduce a Common Action Plan in collaboration with auto-rickshaw drivers. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve last-mile connectivity for metro passengers.
MahaMetro has taken the initiative with auto-rickshaw unions to provide a feeder service, ensuring smooth access to metro stations, especially in areas where metro routes are yet to be extended. A meeting between MahaMetro officials and rickshaw unions was recently held, discussing the introduction of a structured system to facilitate passenger movement.
Key Highlights of the Plan:
- Dedicated Feeder Services: Auto-rickshaws will provide seamless transport from homes to metro stations and vice versa.
- Fare Regulation: Services will operate on a meter-based fare system to ensure affordability.
- Fixed Routes & Schedules: Specific stations, timings, and passenger flow will be considered while implementing the plan.
- Traffic Decongestion: The initiative aims to reduce private vehicle dependency, easing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Currently, many passengers rely on personal vehicles to reach metro stations due to the lack of dedicated parking spaces. The new plan will encourage auto-rickshaws to bridge this gap, enhancing accessibility while benefiting both commuters and drivers.
As per MahaMetro’s Managing Director, Shravan Hardikar in Loksatta, he stated that expanding auto-rickshaw services near metro stations will increase ridership, provide financial benefits to drivers, and improve traffic flow. Baba Shinde, President of Maharashtra State Goods and Passenger Transport Association, assured full support from rickshaw unions in implementing meter-based services for passengers.
With Pune emerging as a metro hub, this collaborative effort is expected to streamline urban mobility while ensuring convenient and cost-effective travel for daily commuters.
