Maharashtra Budget 2025: ₹9,897 Crore Proposal for Pune Metro Phase 2, Over 5 Lakh Jobs to Be Created Through Infrastructure and Innovation Projects

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar, while presenting the state’s budget for the 11th time, announced a ₹9,897 crore proposal for the expansion of Pune Metro under Phase 2. This proposal has been sent to the central government for approval.

Metro Expansion in Maharashtra

To provide eco-friendly, sustainable, and seamless transportation, a total of 143.57 km of metro routes have been operationalized across Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune. Currently, over 10 lakh commuters use metro services daily.

Upcoming Metro Projects

  • Mumbai: 41.2 km of metro lines will be launched this year.
  • Pune: 23.2 km of new metro routes will be added.
  • Total Expansion: 64.4 km of metro routes will be operational this year.
  • Future Plans: A total of 237.5 km of metro routes will be operationalized in the next five years.
  • Nagpur: The first phase of 40 km of Nagpur Metro is complete, while Phase 2 (43.80 km) worth ₹6,708 crore is in progress.
  • Thane Circular Metro and Swargate-Katraj extension projects have received central approval.
  • Pune Metro Phase 2: Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Warje-Manikbagh corridors are awaiting approval for the ₹9,897 crore proposal.
  • Mumbai Metro: Work on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport metro route will commence soon.

“Maharashtra Will Not Stop” – Ajit Pawar

While presenting the budget, Ajit Pawar reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India to become a developed nation by 2047. He emphasized Maharashtra’s commitment to sustainable development, stating, “Maharashtra will not stop, and progress will not be delayed.”

Employment and Innovation

  • Innovation City in Navi Mumbai: A 250-acre hub for startups and job creation.
  • Skill Development for Women: Microsoft will train 10,000 women in AI and other skills through Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skill University.
  • Gadchiroli as a Steel Hub:
    • ₹21,830 crore investment agreements signed at the Davos Economic Forum.
    • Expected to generate 7,500 jobs.
    • ₹500 crore for new mining highways.

Infrastructure Investments

  • Massive Investment Plan:
    • Aviation, Railways, Metro, Highways, Water Transport, Ports, Irrigation, Energy, and Transport will see record investments in the next five years.
    • Every ₹1 invested in infrastructure is expected to boost GSDP by ₹2.5-3.5.
  • Port Development in Palghar:
    • A ₹4,259 crore port project in Mauje Murbe with private sector participation.
  • Water Transport in Mumbai:
    • Financial incentives for modern passenger boats between Gateway of India, Mandwa, and Elephanta.
    • ₹229.27 crore jetty project near Radio Club, Gateway of India.
    • New jetties at Dighi (Raigad), Vengurla (Sindhudurg), Kalher-Dombivli, Kolset, Mira-Bhayander (Thane) under progress.
    • Floating jetty at Kashid (Raigad) to begin soon.

Logistics and Employment Boost

  • State Logistics Policy 2024:
    • Dedicated logistics hubs on over 10,000 acres.
    • Expected to generate 5 lakh direct and indirect jobs.
