In an effort to ensure transparency and eliminate undeserved claims, the Maharashtra government has launched a comprehensive verification drive for the Ladki Bahin Yojana. The state woman and child development (WCD) department will conduct a multi-level scrutiny of submitted documents, including cross-checking, field visits to beneficiaries’ homes, and thorough data matching.

The decision to launch the verification drive was taken after the department received over 200 complaints about fraudulent beneficiaries. As part of the drive, 2.5 lakh applications, which is 1% of the total 2.5 crore applications approved in the state, will be randomly examined. The exercise is expected to take two to three months.

“The verification drive will be rolled out in every district of Maharashtra. There will be checks on the district and divisional levels,” said a senior official of the WCD department.

The department has also proposed filing FIRs against fake claimants, while offering an option to surrender received benefits wrongly. Citizens can report fraudulent activity through the helpline, online portal, or field agents.

The WCD department has urged citizens to report fraudulent activity to ensure that benefits reach only genuine beneficiaries.
