Maharashtra Government Mandates High-Security Registration Plates For Old Vehicles; Advises Online Payment Only Via Official Website
Pune, July 4, 2025: The Maharashtra government has announced that all vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2019, must be fitted with High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) as per the amended Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. The move is aimed at enhancing road safety and preventing crimes related to tampering or use of fake number plates.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ notifications G.S.R. 1162(E) dated December 4, 2018, and S.O. 6052(E) dated December 6, 2018, it is mandatory for all new vehicles manufactured from April 1, 2019, onwards to have HSRP. Extending this provision, the state government has decided to implement it for older vehicles as well.
Officials highlighted that installing HSRP is crucial for national security, as it helps in easy identification of vehicles on roads and curbs criminal activities involving forged number plates. The Supreme Court has also directed authorities to ensure the installation of HSRP on all vehicles.
Vehicle owners have been advised to pay HSRP charges only through the government’s authorised website: https://transport.maharashtra.gov.in to avoid fraudulent platforms.
The district administration has requested all newspapers in Pune to publish this notification widely and free of cost in public interest to ensure maximum awareness among citizens.
