The state government has proposed renaming Pune International Airport after the revered saint Sant Tukaram Maharaj. This decision follows a detailed discussion with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The state government is supportive of the proposal and will soon send it to the central government for approval. The process involves the state government forwarding the proposal to the central authorities, which will then finalize the renaming.

As a representative of Pune, it was emphasized that the local sentiment and historical significance should be considered. Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s ancestral village is Lohegaon, where the Pune airport is located.

This connection underscores the proposal’s relevance. The residents of Lohegaon, along with the broader Varkari sect in Maharashtra, are also in favor of the name change.

Lohegaon’s historical link with Sant Tukaram Maharaj adds emotional and cultural value to the proposal. The local community believes that renaming the airport to honor the saint aligns with their traditions and respect for the saint’s legacy.
