Mumbai, March 11, 2025: The Maharashtra government has made it mandatory for liquor and beer shops in commercial spaces of housing societies to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the respective society before opening. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced this policy in the state assembly, emphasizing that no new liquor shop will be allowed without society approval.

Pawar stated that this decision would help maintain harmony in residential societies, prevent youth addiction, and improve law and order. Additionally, he clarified that if a proposal to shut down an existing liquor shop in a municipal ward is put to a vote, the decision will be based on a 75% majority.

This announcement came in response to concerns raised by MLAs Mahesh Landge and Adv. Rahul Kul regarding law and order issues caused by liquor shops in residential areas. Former minister Sudhir Mungantiwar also contributed to the discussion.

Deputy CM Pawar reiterated that the government is not promoting liquor sales but is committed to enforcing prohibition laws strictly. He highlighted that licenses for new liquor stores have been frozen for decades and that liquor shops near schools and colleges are already prohibited. Furthermore, he assured that strong measures will be taken to curb illegal liquor sales.
