Mumbai, July 11, 2025: Planning for Maharashtra’s upcoming municipal corporations, municipal councils, and Zilla Parishad elections is underway, with the State Election Commission issuing key directives to ensure smooth preparations.

State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare announced that the voter list updated as of July 1, 2025, prepared by the Election Commission of India, will be used for these elections. He emphasized that a separate voter list for local body elections will not be created, and officials should prepare accordingly.

The directives were given during a video conference held today with District Collectors to discuss the preliminary preparations for Zilla Parishad, Panchayat Samiti, Nagar Parishad, and Nagar Panchayat elections. State Election Commission Secretary Suresh Kakani and other senior officials were present.

Key Points from the Meeting:

Increase in Polling Stations:
Waghmare highlighted that local body elections are conducted using a multi-member constituency system, unlike Assembly elections. As a result, the number of polling stations will be higher. The State Election Commission has already issued criteria for finalizing polling stations through separate orders.

Facilities for Voters:
All polling stations must be equipped with facilities considering general voters, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Officials have been instructed to ensure accessibility and convenience at every booth.

Review of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines):
A thorough first-level check of all EVMs should be carried out urgently to ensure they are ready for use. Adequate security measures must be implemented for their storage and transport.

Manpower Planning:
Officials were directed to assess the availability of staff required for conducting elections and coordinate with Divisional Commissioners to address any shortfalls well in advance.

The State Election Commission is making all efforts to ensure the availability of sufficient EVMs and trained manpower to handle the large-scale civic polls. Preparations for polling station locations, infrastructure, and logistics should also begin immediately.
