Premature baby mistakenly pronounced dead at government hospital, found breathing 12 hours later

In a chilling yet miraculous incident in Maharashtra’s Beed district, a newborn who was declared dead by doctors was found alive just as the family was about to bury him. The incident took place on July 7 at the Swami Ramanand Teerth Government Hospital in Ambajogai, where a 31-year-old woman, Balika Ghuge, from Hol village in Kaij taluka, gave birth to a premature baby boy.

The baby, born via C-section at 27 weeks of gestation, weighed only 900 grams. Hospital staff, after assessing the baby, declared him dead and placed the body in a box overnight. The infant remained at the hospital for 12 hours, before being handed over to the family the following morning.

But just moments before the burial, the baby’s grandmother requested to see the child one last time. Upon unwrapping the cloth, she noticed movement. The family was stunned. “We were about to bury him. But when we saw him move, we were overjoyed,” said the baby’s grandfather, Sakharam Ghuge.

The family rushed the baby to Ambajogai Government Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the child was indeed alive and currently in stable condition under medical care at Swami Teerth Rural Hospital.

The baby’s mother stated that they had noticed the baby moving even while leaving the hospital, but nurses dismissed their concerns. “They said he was dead. But it turned out he was not,” she said.

Medical experts have speculated that this could be a rare case of “Lazarus syndrome” or “suspended animation”, where vital signs drop to nearly undetectable levels, leading to a mistaken declaration of death. However, an official medical explanation has not yet been confirmed.
