Devendra Bhuyar, an independent MLA from Warud-Morshi in Maharashtra, has ignited a controversy with his remarks categorizing women based on their appearance and their preferences for marriage. Speaking at a public event in Warud tehsil, Bhuyar claimed that women, particularly those deemed “beautiful,” prefer to marry men with jobs rather than sons of farmers.

During his speech, Bhuyar divided women into three “grades,” suggesting that the most attractive women do not marry farmers’ sons, instead choosing men with stable employment. “A beautiful girl will not like a person like you or me but will opt for someone with a job,” Bhuyar stated, implying that women in the first and second categories prefer men who are employed or run businesses such as grocery stores or paan kiosks.

He went on to claim that only “third-grade” women marry into farming families, adding that the children born from such unions lack good looks. His comments were quickly met with backlash, particularly for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and degrading language toward women.

Congress leader and former Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister, Yashomati Thakur, condemned Bhuyar’s remarks, criticizing his disrespectful categorization of women. She urged Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, whom Bhuyar supports, to rein in such behavior. “No one will tolerate the categorization of women in this manner. Society will hold you accountable,” Thakur asserted.
