Pune, September 27 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for several parts of Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant as multiple regions brace for intense downpours.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune Ghat area and Palghar, with some areas expected to receive very intense spells. Coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, along with the ghat regions of Nashik, are also likely to experience heavy showers.

In addition, alerts have been issued for Nanded, Latur, Solapur, Pune, Dharashiv, Beed, Ahilyanagar, Satara, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. While rainfall intensity in north Maharashtra, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha may remain lower compared to the Konkan belt, isolated heavy spells cannot be ruled out.

A low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal has been identified as the key factor intensifying the rainfall across the state. For the past few days, Mumbai had seen subdued rain and rising temperatures, but fresh showers are expected to return with force.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas, refrain from unnecessary travel, and not take shelter under trees during thunderstorms. Crossing waterlogged roads or bridges is strongly discouraged, and the public has been cautioned against spreading or believing rumours.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been placed on high alert, with teams deployed in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nagpur, Solapur, Dharashiv, Beed, and Latur to provide immediate relief and assist civic authorities if needed.
