Maharashtra State To Introduce 1-Year BEd Course From 2026
In a move to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the state directorate of higher education has decided to offer a 1-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) course from the 2026-27 academic year. This new format will replace the existing multiple duration courses ranging from 2 to 4 years.
As per the new guidelines, students who complete a 4-year undergraduate or postgraduate programme will be eligible for admission to the 1-year BEd course. This move aims to restructure teacher training programmes in line with NEP guidelines.
Additionally, colleges will offer specialisations in physical education, art education, yoga education, and Sanskrit education from 2025. Director of higher and technical education, Shailendra Deolankar, announced that a notification regarding these changes will be issued in 2025.
The National Council for Teacher Education has also announced changes to the rules and criteria of the Teacher Eligibility Test, which will be implemented before the batch of candidates for the 4-year integrated degree in 2027.
Under the NEP, teachers will undergo training based on four levels: foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary. The first batch of BA BEd, BSC BEd, and BCom BEd started in 2023.
