Maharashtra to Get ₹4,819 Crore for Gondia-Balharshah Railway Project as Union Cabinet Approves Major Rail Expansions
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved four major railway multi-tracking projects worth ₹18,658 crore. These projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 1,247 km, covering 15 districts across Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
Among them, Maharashtra will receive ₹4,819 crore for the Gondia-Balharshah railway line doubling project, spanning 240 km.

Key Railway Projects in Maharashtra and Other States
- Maharashtra: The Gondia-Balharshah project will improve railway capacity, benefiting passenger and freight transport while boosting tourism and the local economy.
- Chhattisgarh: A new 615 km railway line will be developed at a cost of ₹8,741 crore, expected to reduce logistics costs by ₹2,520 crore.
- Odisha: A 277 km project costing ₹3,917 crore will add a third and fourth track between Sambalpur and Jarapada, along with another expansion between Jharsuguda and Sason.
The Gondia-Balharshah railway expansion will strengthen Maharashtra’s connectivity and enhance transportation between northern and southern states.
