The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds over the next 24 hours. While Mumbai and some Konkan areas have seen a temporary break from rain, Western Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha continue to witness heavy downpours and flood-like conditions.

According to the IMD’s Mumbai centre, South-Central Maharashtra is likely to experience thunder and lightning with rain, accompanied by wind speeds of 30–40 kmph. Citizens in these regions have been advised to remain alert.

Forecast Highlights

  • North Madhya Maharashtra: Thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rain expected; winds may reach 40 kmph.
  • 13–15 September: Senior meteorologist Krishnanand Hosalikar has indicated that rainfall intensity may increase in interior Maharashtra and North Konkan, including Mumbai and coastal belts.
  • From 16 September: Rainfall activity may reduce in Konkan, though light showers could persist in isolated areas.

District Updates

  • Chandrapur: The district received 28 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, leading to rising water levels in rivers and dams. Authorities have issued flood alerts for villages along riverbanks. So far, the district has recorded 96.2% of its annual rainfall average.
  • Solapur: In Akkalkot’s Shirshi village, over 100 residents were stranded after heavy rain and overflowing streams surrounded the settlement. Thankfully, water has not entered the village, and all residents are reported safe.
  • Dharashiv (Osmanabad): Excessive rainfall has severely impacted agriculture, with over 2 lakh hectares of crops damaged across 23 of the district’s 42 circles. Farmers are facing significant losses due to standing crops being submerged.
