Weather Alert: Maharashtra Faces Six Days of Heavy Rain, Experts Warn of Flood Risk
Heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai and adjoining districts on Wednesday, leading to severe waterlogging, traffic snarls, and commuter disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow alert for Mumbai city and suburbs and an Orange alert for the ghats of Pune district on 21st August 2025.
According to IMD’s latest forecast, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Mumbai are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, while isolated places in Pune ghats may receive intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Nashik’s ghat areas remain under a Yellow alert, while no significant rainfall warning has been issued for Marathwada, Vidarbha, North Maharashtra, and Western Maharashtra.
Current Situation in Mumbai
Continuous downpour has led to flooded roads and stranded vehicles.
Maharashtra Disaster Management Department reported six rain-related deaths in the last 24 hours.
A red nowcast warning was earlier issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri.
Government Response
CM Devendra Fadnavis assured that the situation is under control. “All necessary precautions are being taken by NDRF and SDRF teams. We are also coordinating with neighboring states regarding water discharge from dams,” he said.
Weather Outlook After 21st August
IMD has indicated that rainfall intensity across Maharashtra is likely to gradually reduce after 21st August, bringing some respite after nearly 10 days of relentless showers.
