Maharashtra Weather: Heavy Rain Forecast for Next 48 Hours; Red Alert Issued for Several Districts, Authorities Urge Caution
Weather Update: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Pune And Adjoining DistrictsÂ
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several coastal districts in Maharashtra as extremely heavy rainfall is expected over the next 48 hours. The warning primarily covers parts of the Konkan region, with Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg predicted to experience intense downpours.
Widespread rainfall activity began Saturday evening across most parts of the state and is expected to intensify further. According to IMD, Mumbai and surrounding suburbs will witness heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next two days. Meanwhile, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts have been placed under a yellow alert, while an orange alert has been issued for several other parts of Konkan.
In Ratnagiri and Raigad, torrential rainfall has already triggered flood-like conditions. Several areas in Mangao, Mahad, and Roha witnessed cloudburst-like rain, with water entering homes and roads submerged. In Palshat, Guhagar, river overflow has led to flooding in adjacent residential areas. The Parshuram Ghat region also experienced severe waterlogging, causing significant traffic snarls.
The IMD has extended the red alert for Ratnagiri through Sunday and issued a red alert for Sindhudurg on Monday, citing continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the region. The rest of the Konkan belt remains under orange alert, while Mumbai has been placed under a yellow alert.
Despite the monsoon’s delayed progress in certain areas, it has now reactivated with strong intensity, particularly over central Maharashtra and coastal regions. The active phase of the monsoon is likely to persist, and several areas may continue to witness heavy showers in the coming days.
Civic authorities have advised residents, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency response teams are on standby to deal with any untoward incidents arising from the adverse weather conditions.
