In a move to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and promote cleaner transportation, the Maharashtra Government is planning to waive toll charges for EVs on two major highways — the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the proposal is part of the state’s new EV policy, which aims to increase the share of EVs in Maharashtra to 25%. The initiative, drafted by the transport department, is expected to be rolled out from May 1, once it receives approval from the finance and other relevant departments. Sources in the state secretariat told Hindustan Times that the cabinet is likely to approve the proposal soon.

Last month, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state would withdraw its plan to impose a 6% motor vehicle tax on electric vehicles priced above ₹30 lakh, signaling continued support for EV buyers.

Currently, EVs make up just 6% of the total 48.82 million registered vehicles in the state as of January 1, 2025, according to the Economic Survey of Maharashtra. In contrast, Delhi has a 12% EV share, Karnataka 9%, and Tamil Nadu 8%.

In related developments, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) recently stated that toll charges on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will not be increased until April 2030. However, toll rates on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway are set to rise starting next April. These steps reflect the state’s broader efforts to encourage eco-friendly transport and position Maharashtra as a leader in sustainable mobility.
