Man Jumps Off Mantralaya Building in Mumbai, Lands on Safety Net | Video Goes Viral
Mumbai: A man allegedly attempted suicide on Tuesday by jumping off the Mantralaya building, the Maharashtra government headquarters in South Mumbai, but was saved by a safety net installed between the first and second floors.
Video Shows Police Rescuing the Man
A video of the incident, which has surfaced on social media, shows police personnel persuading the man after he landed on the net before eventually rescuing him. Officials confirmed that he did not sustain any serious injuries.
According to reports, the man was carrying pamphlets related to a property dispute in Nashik. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind his actions.
Mantralaya Suicide Attempts: A Recurring Concern
This is not the first time someone has attempted to jump from the Mantralaya building. In October last year, then Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal and several legislators jumped from the third floor onto the safety nets while protesting for Dhangar community reservations under the ST category.
A similar video from the protest had shown tribal leaders being rescued by police and security personnel.
Safety Measures at Mantralaya
The safety net was installed in 2018 after a series of suicide attempts at the Maharashtra secretariat. The move followed a tragic month where two individuals died by suicide, and two others survived similar jumps.
One of the notable cases was that of Harshal Raote, a 45-year-old murder convict, who jumped from the fifth floor after officials rejected his parole extension request. The opposition had then raised concerns, calling Mantralaya a “suicide point” and demanding stricter security measures.
Authorities Investigating the Latest Incident
The Mumbai Police and government officials are now investigating the latest incident to prevent similar occurrences.
