What was meant to be a new beginning turned into an ordeal of trauma and pain for a 26-year-old woman from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Shanu (also known as Shanvi), who got married to Shivam Ujjawal in an arranged marriage earlier this year, has come forward with disturbing allegations of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and even forced miscarriage.
According to Shanu, shortly after her grand wedding on March 6—which cost her family a staggering ₹77 lakh, including ₹16 lakh worth of jewellery, a ₹24 lakh Mahindra Scorpio, and ₹10 lakh in cash—her life took a dark turn. What seemed like a promising future was quickly overshadowed by cruel expectations, mental torture, and physical abuse at the hands of her husband and in-laws.
Shanu alleged that her husband, a physical education teacher at a government school, had an obsession with the physical appearance of Bollywood celebrity Nora Fatehi. This obsession translated into relentless body shaming and unrealistic demands.
“Even though I have fair skin and an average height, I was constantly told I wasn’t good enough. My husband compared me to actresses and made me feel unattractive,” Shanu said in her complaint.
The situation worsened when Shivam allegedly forced her to work out for three hours every day, expecting her to attain a body like Nora Fatehi. If she ever missed a session, she was reportedly denied food for days.
“He believed he could have easily married someone prettier. I was punished with starvation for not working out,” she added.
Her daily life was marred by constant humiliation and control. Shanu said that she wasn’t allowed privacy in her own room, and her father-in-law would enter without warning, claiming he was checking on his son.
She also accused her in-laws of burdening her with household chores from the very beginning, isolating her from Shivam and restricting any time together. Even trivial matters, like forgetting to set up a mosquito net, would lead to fights. In one instance, after such an argument, Shivam reportedly threw a diary at her face and stormed off, while his parents verbally abused her.
Despite already spending an enormous sum on the wedding, her in-laws allegedly continued demanding more—cash, clothes, kitchen appliances, and even land. When Shanu refused to bring more from her parental home, she was verbally degraded and mentally tortured.
“They kept saying I was ruining Shivam’s life. They would call me fat, ugly, and undeserving. My husband even told me to leave the house,” she said.
Her emotional distress deepened when she discovered Shivam was chatting with another woman, allegedly named Mahi. Upon confronting him, he responded by slapping her. In another incident, when her husband insulted her brother without cause, and she spoke up, she was forced by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law to bow down and apologise to him.
The most heart-wrenching part of her story involves her pregnancy. When she shared the news with her in-laws, she was met with silence. A few days later, her sister-in-law Ruchi allegedly gave her a pill, falsely claiming it would help with the pregnancy. “My husband told me, ‘I haven’t accepted you, how can I accept your child?’” Shanu recounted.
After consuming the pill and being fed curd laced with unidentified spices, Shanu began experiencing severe throat irritation. A few weeks later, on July 9, doctors confirmed that she had suffered a miscarriage, likely as a result of the forced abortion.
Unable to bear the abuse any longer, Shanu’s parents took her back to their home on June 18. However, the very same day, she received threatening calls from Shivam and his family, warning her of divorce. When she attempted to return to her marital home on July 26, she was not only denied entry but was also refused her personal belongings, including her jewellery and clothes.
Shanu has since filed a police complaint on August 14, detailing the emotional, physical, and mental trauma she endured. Her allegations include dowry harassment, domestic violence, forced miscarriage, and threats of divorce.
