Massive 50-Metre Sinkhole Opens in Bangkok, Swallows Car and Power Poles – Shocking Video Goes Viral
Bangkok woke up to chaos on Wednesday, September 24, when a giant sinkhole suddenly opened up near the busy Vajira Hospital. The gaping hole, about 50 meters deep, swallowed cars, electricity poles, and even tore apart water pipes, leaving the area in shock. What began as a normal morning turned into a scene of panic as the ground beneath the road slowly gave way.
The sinkhole appeared on a major four-lane road, and within minutes the entire stretch began to sink. People nearby watched in disbelief as the asphalt cracked and slid downward. Cars that were driving close to the spot tried to reverse, but one vehicle was pulled in and another was left hanging dangerously at the edge. Videos shared online show power poles tilting and falling as the hole grew bigger and water from a burst pipe gushed across the street.
Despite the frightening scene, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that no one was hurt. However, three vehicles were damaged in the collapse. The sinkhole stopped just in front of a police station, exposing the underground layers of the road. With electricity poles and water pipes ripped apart, the area was left without power and water supply. Vajira Hospital, which stands close to the site, had to shut down its outpatient services for two days to keep patients safe.

Governor Sittipunt said early checks suggest that work on a new underground metro station could be the reason behind the disaster. According to him, part of the station’s ceiling may have been damaged, allowing soil from above to fall into the tunnel and underground space that is still being built. This sudden loss of soil support caused the road and nearby structures to sink. He explained that while the side of the road leading toward Sanghi Bridge remains firm, the collapsed side has softer soil and no strong supporting structures.

Scene of Panic Caught on Camera
Videos taken by passersby show how quickly the ground gave way. The road surface sank in slow motion, dragging down electricity poles like matchsticks and breaking water pipes that sprayed jets of water. People could be seen running to safer spots as the sinkhole widened, cutting across the entire four-lane road. The shocking visuals spread quickly on social media, with viewers around the world amazed at how fast the collapse unfolded.
Repair Works Underway
Authorities have closed the damaged road completely and rushed repair teams to the site. Electricity has been cut off in the area for safety, and workers are trying to restore the road at full speed. The governor assured residents that efforts are being made to secure the surrounding buildings and stabilize the soil to prevent further damage. For now, locals have been asked to stay away from the site until repairs are completed.
