Husbands call for gender-neutral laws, emphasizing the need for men’s rights and protection against false allegations.

In Surat, Gujarat, a group of husbands gathered to protest against the suicide of Bangalore-based engineer Atul Subhash, highlighting what they perceive as growing harassment faced by men due to biased laws. The protestors, who carried placards and slogans, were calling for reforms in the legal system, especially advocating for the creation of a Men’s Commission.

The demonstration, held at Athvan Lines Circle, aimed to raise awareness about the emotional and psychological toll that biased laws have on men and their families. Among the slogans displayed on placards were messages like “Men’s Rights Are Human Rights,” “Safe Family Save Nation,” and “Man Not ATM,” underscoring the frustration of husbands who feel victimized in family disputes.

Protesters also cited disturbing statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau, which report that over 1,22,000 men die by suicide every year, a figure they argue reflects the harsh reality many men face in terms of mental health, legal harassment and societal pressure.

Many participants voiced their concerns about the unjust treatment of men under existing laws, particularly in the context of divorce and domestic violence cases. Some protesters highlighted the problem of false accusations, which they believe not only damage men’s reputations but also tear apart families. They are calling for gender-neutral legislation that offers protection and fairness for both men and women.

The protest was a unique display of the struggles many men face in the current legal landscape, with a strong emphasis on the importance of men’s mental health and rights in the ongoing discussions about gender equality.
