On Sunday 25th February 2024, The Ministry Of Education declared that according to the National Education Policy (NEP)2020 and the Right to Children to Free and Compulsory Education(RTE) Act 2009, the minimum age for class 1 eligibility is minimum of 6 years old.

This highlights the value of early childhood care education and acknowledges that children between the ages of 3 and 6 require a different approach than the usual 10+2 structure. The new structure will be 5+3+3+4.

According to the new structure, the first stage (5) is for the age group of 3-8 years I.e. preschool to class 2. The second stage is for (3) age group 8-11 years I.e. class 3-5. The third stage is for (3) age 11-14 I.e. class 6-8. The fourth and final stage (4) Is for ages 14-18 I.e. 9-12.

Earlier, the structure of age eligibility was not uniform. In states such as Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the minimum age for class 1 is five years whereas In Maharashtra and West Bengal, the minimum age is six years.

With this new structure and approach the preschool children up to class 2 are given a different approach to studies and will be a step towards betterment and development in studies of the students.

The letter read, ” The session 2024-25 is soon to begin when new admissions will take place. It is expected that the age in your state/UT (Union Territory) has now been aligned to 6+ for admission to Grade-1, accordingly.”
