Missing Link Project: New Tunnel and Bridge Almost Ready on Mumbai–Pune Route, Faster Travel Soon
Mumbai, July 16, 2025 — Travelers on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway are in for a major boost as the ambitious ‘Missing Link Project’ nears completion. According to officials, nearly 94% of the work on the project has been finished, and it is expected to open for traffic soon. Once operational, the new section will cut travel time between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 30 minutes, offering smoother and safer journeys.
Engineering Marvel with Record-Breaking Features
During a recent inspection, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared key highlights of the project. The Missing Link includes three tunnels, one of which stretches 9 kilometers in length and 23 meters in width, set to become the longest road tunnel in India—surpassing the current record held by the Samruddhi Mahamarg tunnel. Additionally, the project features a 185-meter-high bridge, which will become the tallest bridge in the country.
Significant Time Savings and Enhanced Safety
Chief Minister Fadnavis noted that the new route will help reduce heavy traffic congestion and accidents, especially in the ghat (hill) sections of the expressway. By diverting traffic onto this new alignment, the project aims to improve overall road safety, cut fuel consumption, and save travelers’ valuable time.
A Triumph of Modern Engineering
Calling it “an engineering marvel,” Fadnavis praised the technical expertise and meticulous planning involved in building tunnels, high bridges, and steep gradients in a challenging terrain. The project has been described as one of India’s most complex road construction undertakings.
Final Stages Underway
With most of the construction work finished, final touches like tunnel finishing, installation of safety systems, and traffic signaling are progressing swiftly. Fadnavis commended the engineers and workers for their dedication, even under difficult conditions.
Deputy CM Highlights Economic Impact
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was also present during the inspection, emphasized that the completion of this project will accelerate Maharashtra’s development. Beyond improving commuter convenience, the project is expected to reduce pollution, lower fuel usage, and stimulate economic activity between Mumbai and Pune.
Project Highlights at a Glance:
- New Link Length: ~13 kilometers
- Tunnel: 9 km long, 23 meters wide – India’s longest
- Bridge: 185 meters high – India’s tallest
- Travel Benefit: ~30 minutes reduction in travel time, less traffic congestion
- Technology: Advanced construction methods and safety systems
Boost to Tourism and Trade
Once operational, the Missing Link Project is expected to significantly benefit trade, logistics, and tourism between Mumbai and Pune. The faster route will support the transport industry and bring economic gains to nearby towns and villages by increasing connectivity and local business opportunities.
