A new rule making high-security number plates mandatory for vehicles registered before 2019 has sparked controversy in Maharashtra.  According to Lokmat, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is strongly opposing the decision, calling it unfair to vehicle owners. MNS General Secretary Ajay Shinde has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding an immediate rollback of the rule.

The Supreme Court had directed the central government to enforce high-security number plates to prevent vehicle theft. Following this, several states, including Maharashtra, began implementing the rule. However, MNS argues that enforcing this rule on millions of vehicle owners is unjust.

Criticizing the decision Shinde said, “This rule forces common people to bear an unnecessary financial burden. The government will collect heavy fines, and corruption will increase. Selected companies have been given contracts for supplying these number plates, raising concerns of malpractice.”

MNS has urged the state government to withdraw the rule. The party has directly appealed to Chief Minister Fadnavis, stating, “The government should not use the court’s order as a shield to impose this decision. The rule should be optional for vehicles registered before 2019.”

Many vehicle owners across the state have expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. MNS continues to push for a reconsideration, arguing that the rule is more about revenue generation than public safety. The party has warned that it will intensify its opposition if the government does not act on its demands.
