Pune, July 19: A full-scale emergency mock drill simulating “smoke in the cockpit” of an incoming aircraft was conducted at Pune Airport on Saturday to assess the preparedness and response capabilities of multiple agencies in the event of an aviation emergency, officials said.
The exercise, conducted under the directives of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Airport Emergency Plan, as well as inter-agency coordination and operational efficiency in managing a critical incident.

According to an official release, the mock drill involved around 330 personnel from various organisations, including the Indian Air Force, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) teams, and local civic fire brigades from Pune and neighbouring regions.
As part of the scenario, the dummy aircraft reported smoke in the cockpit, triggering an emergency response. Firefighting and rescue units were swiftly mobilised to the site, and “survivors” were evacuated and transported to designated reception centres for medical care and support.
Independent evaluators reviewed the drill in a post-exercise debriefing, offering observations and recommendations to enhance future response protocols.
Authorities said the drill was a routine but crucial part of maintaining aviation safety and ensuring coordinated emergency responses at the airport.
