Monsoon Thrills or Fatal Missteps? Why Safety Must Be the First Step of Every Rainy Getaway

As monsoon rains breathe life into India’s hills, rivers, and waterfalls, thousands of adventure seekers flock to nature spots for a refreshing escape. But amid the scenic beauty lies a hidden threat — the season’s charm often blinds people to its dangers.

Every year, popular spots like waterfalls, dams, and forts see a surge in accidents, some tragically fatal. Just recently at Kundmala, a collapsed bridge over a swollen river claimed four lives. Last year, five family members were swept away at Lonavala’s Bhushi Dam. Social media influencer Anvi lost her life while taking a selfie near Kumbhe Waterfall — just one of many such heartbreaking stories.

Viral videos show overcrowded tourist hotspots like Devkund Waterfall, where slippery rocks, gushing waters, and risky behavior collide. One clip, shared by the Instagram handle punewatavaran, shows jam-packed visitors near the water’s edge, many ignoring the very real dangers. The caption says it all: “Your life is in your hands – travel responsibly.”

Rain-swollen rivers and moss-covered rocks may look harmless but can turn deadly in seconds. Sudden water surges, poor footing, and thrill-seeking for photos or reels all contribute to growing monsoon mishaps.

As travel season peaks, so must awareness. The beauty of the monsoon should be cherished — not chased at the cost of safety.

Enjoy the rains, but respect their power. Let the memories be magical, not tragic.
