An ode to South India’s beloved breakfast that unites taste, tradition, and health

Google dedicated its Doodle on October 11, 2025, to the idli, celebrating the soft, steamed delicacy that holds a cherished place in South Indian cuisine and Indian households worldwide. The Doodle creatively turns the Google logo into idlis, chutneys, and bowls of batter laid out on a banana leaf, paying homage to one of India’s most comforting dishes.

In a note accompanying the tribute, Google described idli as “a soft, fluffy, and savoury steamed dish that holds a special place in South Indian cuisine”, adding that its simplicity and versatility have made it a cultural icon across generations. The animated artwork captures the familiar trio of idli, sambar, and chutney, a combination synonymous with warmth and tradition.

Though World Idli Day is officially observed on March 30, Google’s choice to feature the dish in October is part of its ongoing effort to celebrate foods that transcend borders and connect communities through shared culture. The 2025 Doodle is not tied to any specific festival or anniversary but serves as an independent tribute to idli’s timeless appeal.

Made from a fermented batter of rice and urad dal, idli is rich in nutrients, light on the stomach, and entirely vegan and gluten-free. Its preparation—soaking, fermenting, and steaming—embodies the slow, mindful cooking traditions of Indian kitchens.

From Chennai homes to New York cafés, idli continues to represent comfort, nourishment, and a sense of belonging. Google’s tribute acknowledges not just a dish, but a cultural thread that ties millions together every morning.
