Over 42,000 residents and businesses in Pune district have had their electricity disconnected due to unpaid bills totaling nearly Rs. 200 crore. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has launched a strict recovery drive, cutting power to defaulters across five districts under the Pune Regional Division.

In the past 35 days, MSECDL disconnected power to 42,073 defaulters in Pune, making it the worst-affected district. Across the region, total outstanding dues stand at Rs. 310.84 crore, with Pune contributing Rs. 199.99 crore. Other districts also face high dues:

  • Solapur: Rs. 44.07 crore (4,279 disconnections)
  • Satara: Rs. 20.40 crore (1,920 disconnections)
  • Kolhapur: Rs. 20.80 crore (1,490 disconnections)
  • Sangli: Rs. 24.95 crore (1,973 disconnections)

MSEDCL officials say the company is struggling financially due to these unpaid dues. Despite repeated appeals, non-payment of electricity dues remains a major concern. Special teams are monitoring to prevent illegal reconnections. Those caught stealing electricity will face legal action under Sections 135 and 138 of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, leading to penalties or even criminal charges.

Pune Regional Director Bhujang Khandare and Chief Engineer Rajendra Pawar are supervising the operation. Officials warn the drive will continue until significant recovery is achieved. Consumers must clear dues to restore power. Payments can be made online via the MSEDCL website or mobile app. Those owing over Rs. 5,000 should use RTGS or NEFT.
