MSRDC’s Rs.30 Crore Tree Planting on Mumbai Pune expressway Tender Under Fire from Citizens’ Group

MSRDC’s Rs.30 Crore Tree Planting on Mumbai Pune expressway Tender Under Fire from Citizens' Group
Pune: A citizens’ group, Sajag Nagrik Manch, has raised objections to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation’s (MSRDC) Rs 30-crore tender for planting trees along the Mumbai-Pune expressway near Talegaon. The group is questioning the need for this new tender, citing a 2004 contract that mandated the planting of 1 lakh trees.
As part of the new work order, approximately 1 lakh trees are again set to be planted. Vivek Velankar from Sajag Nagrik Manch pointed out that the tender allocates Rs 1 crore for planting trees every 4 kilometers. He noted, “In the 2004 toll contract for the expressway, the contractor was supposed to plant 1 lakh trees. So, where did these 1 lakh trees go? Why is there a new expenditure of Rs 30 crore now?”
Velankar emphasized that ultimately, taxpayers will bear the costs through tolls. The group has requested that the new tender process be halted until MSRDC provides a clear account of the previous tree-planting efforts.
In response, MSRDC stated that the current tree plantation is part of their commitment to environmental protection. They explained that the areas selected for the new plantation are different and will enhance greenery along the expressway.
The situation highlights the ongoing concerns about transparency and accountability in public spending. As citizens await further clarification, the demand for a review of past projects remains a priority for the Sajag Nagrik Manch.
