Altercation between cabbie and Ertiga driver leads to reckless drive through city streets, FIR filed after viral video sparks outrage

A shocking incident unfolded on the streets of Mumbai late Tuesday night when a man was driven for nearly 6 kilometres while clinging to the bonnet of a moving car following a heated altercation.

The episode began in the parking lot of the domestic terminal at Mumbai’s Vile Parle airport, where a confrontation broke out between two drivers.

According to officials at the Airport Police Station, the driver of a white Ertiga had just dropped off a passenger and was waiting for another pick-up when a private cab driver approached and asked him to vacate the spot. The exchange quickly escalated into a physical dispute, drawing more cab drivers to support their colleague.

Sensing the growing crowd, the Ertiga driver tried to flee the scene. In a desperate attempt to stop him, the cabbie stepped in front of the car, ending up on its bonnet. Undeterred, the Ertiga driver continued driving at speed, with the man still clinging to the front of the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses and a viral video from the scene show the cab driver hanging on to the bonnet, pleading with the driver to stop. Instead, the car sped through traffic, ignoring calls from bystanders. The vehicle finally came to a halt near Jogeshwari, around 6 km from the airport.

The video, widely shared on social media, triggered public outrage and led to swift action by the Mumbai Police. The accused, identified as Bhimprasad Gyani Mahto, 24, a resident of Vartak Nagar in Thane, has since been arrested.

An FIR was registered at the Airport Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 281 (rash driving), 125, 126(2), 115(2), and 352 (assault). Mahto was also booked under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act and served a notice under Section 35(3) of BNSS.

Police from the Vile Parle station and Vakola Traffic Department are jointly investigating the matter. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise restraint and responsibility, especially in high-security zones like airport premises.
