Mumbai Horror: 17-Year-Old Girl Set on Fire in Andheri, Fighting for Life
A 17-year-old girl is fighting for her life with 60 percent burns after a man reportedly set her on fire in the Andheri area of Mumbai, according to police reports on Tuesday. The girl and the 30-year-old suspect, both living in Marol, had been friends for several months.
The event occurred at approximately 11:30 PM on Sunday behind a hospital in the Marol Gaonthan area, during which the suspect also sustained burn injuries.
A case has been filed against the accused in accordance with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for intentionally inflicting serious injury through the use of acid, among other charges, and an investigation is currently in progress, they stated.
According to an official, while the victim was relaxing in a chawl with her female friends after dinner, the accused, identified as Jitendra alias Jitu Tambe, reportedly doused her with petrol and ignited her.
The girl sustained burns covering 60 percent of her body, affecting her face, neck, abdomen, intimate areas, hands, and legs, according to the official.
Currently in critical condition and unable to communicate, she is receiving care at the Dr. R N Cooper Hospital, which is managed by the civic authorities.
A boy familiar with the girl alerted her mother about the situation.
Upon arriving at the scene, the mother discovered her daughter suffering from multiple burn injuries.
The victim and the suspect were acquaintances, having developed a friendship over the past few months and frequently meeting in the vicinity, according to a statement from the authorities, referencing a complaint submitted by the victim’s mother.
The mother had inquired whether her daughter was in a relationship with the man, but the girl had refuted this claim, as noted in the complaint. Subsequently, the mother confronted the man and requested that he refrain from seeing her daughter, the complaint further stated.
The accused sustained burns on his hands, back, and genital areas and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital, says the FIR.
In the report, authorities stated that the victim resides in the Marol area of Andheri (East) with her three siblings and parents. According to them, her father works as a driver while her mother is a tailor.
