A recent viral video on Reddit captures a confrontation between hotel staff and a guest over coffee stains on a linen sheet and a pillow, with the hotel demanding “Rs 2500 plus taxes” for the damage. In the clip posted by Redditor @EnlightendSatan, the guest is seen trying to negotiate with the staff, who insist that the stains are beyond cleaning. The guest counters by urging them to attempt to clean the stains and even offers to handle the cleaning himself.

The discussion escalates as both parties argue about the severity of the damage, with the guest claiming it was “only a few drops of coffee,” while the staff maintains that the spill was quite substantial.

The caption accompanying the video reads, “I spilled coffee on linen and they’re charging me 2500+taxes and saying it’s damage to property @IHG hotel, what should I do?”

The discussion online has really split opinions, with some people labeling it as “damage” to the property, while others argue that hotels typically don’t impose such charges.

One Reddit user mentioned, “I’ve spilled coffee a couple of times. Never been charged.” Another chimed in, saying, “I was fined in a hotel for ruining a napkin.”

Then there was someone who shared their own experience, stating, “Good 4-star hotels let it go. Customer is more important than a bedsheet and cushion covers.”

Interestingly, a Redditor claiming to be a hotelier explained, “Hotelier here, there’s more to it than whatever OP is claiming. Any 4-5 star, even 3-star properties don’t penalize guests for damaging room supplies since the room revenue more than makes up for petty stuff like that. The linens anyway go through their life cycle all the time and are in bulk. There could be a history with the hotel.”

Another Reddit user added, “I stayed at one of the Taj hotels and dropped tea on the linen. They didn’t charge me for it and just changed it for me when I asked them to.”

Someone Stated, “This is definitely considered as damage to the property. I am sure in their Terms and Conditions, they have a clause saying you need to pay if you cause any damage to the property. Especially considering that it is a proper hotel and not some guest house/lodge, they will have this covered in the Terms and Conditions.”
