Mumbai Housing Projects To Get Momentum With New Self-Redevelopment Recommendations
Mumbai, July 15, 2025: In a major step towards transforming Mumbai’s housing landscape, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a meeting at Vidhan Bhavan on Monday to review the ‘Cooperative Housing Societies Self-Redevelopment – Cluster Self-Redevelopment Study Committee’ report.
MLC Pravin Darekar presented the much-awaited report, which aims to streamline and accelerate self-redevelopment projects across Maharashtra. The committee was commended for submitting its recommendations ahead of schedule. These suggestions will now be reviewed by the Housing, Cooperation, and Urban Development Departments before a Cabinet proposal is prepared. Approved points will then be implemented through Government Resolutions, with a progress update expected in the Winter Session.
Since the launch of the self-redevelopment policy in 2019, 18 out of 19 major demands have already been addressed. Formed in April 2025, the Darekar Committee has now offered clear and practical recommendations to resolve lingering challenges, including financing solutions, slum rehabilitation, redevelopment of cess and non-cess buildings, and issues related to deemed conveyance and airport regulations.
The Mumbai District Cooperative Bank was lauded for supporting redevelopment proposals, with over 1,600 pending cases highlighting the need for timely financial assistance. A proposal seeking financial backing through the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has also been sent to Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.
Senior leaders and officials, including Legislative Council Chairman Prof. Ram Shinde, Assembly Speaker Adv. Rahul Narwekar, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, BJP State President MLA Ravindra Chavan, and Ministers Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Ashish Shelar, and Babasaheb Patil, attended the meeting.
This initiative is expected to fast-track housing projects and help thousands of families in Mumbai realize their dream of modern, secure homes.
