Mumbai is set to observe a four-day liquor ban starting from November 18, ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections . The Election Commission has prohibited the sale of alcohol across Mumbai to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process. This move aims to minimize disruptions and ensure voters make informed choices without external influences.
The dry days are scheduled as follows: November 18, with liquor sales banned after 6 pm; November 19, a full dry day; November 20, liquor sales prohibited throughout election day until 6 pm; and November 23, a partial liquor ban until 6 pm as the Election Commission announces results . The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also declared November 20 a public holiday for all employees working in businesses and offices within its limits.
The liquor ban will be observed not only in Mumbai but also in neighboring areas, including Palghar, Kalyan, and Thane. These constituencies are among the key areas going to polls on November 20. The Election Commission’s directive ensures that the constituency where the election is held and adjacent constituencies follow these dry days to maintain public order.
The BMC’s decision to declare a public holiday aims to encourage maximum voter turnout, allowing residents to exercise their franchise without work-related obstacles. Employers have been urged to comply with the public holiday order, ensuring employees can cast their votes without facing disciplinary action or salary deductions.
Polling for all 288 Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra will take place in a single phase on November 20, with counting of votes and announcement of results scheduled for November 23. This election is crucial, with a fierce contest between the Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi alliances. Approximately 9.7 million eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots in this significant election.
