Mumbai: Two Women Assaulted by Thane Men for Saying 'Excuse Me' in English, Not Marathi - VIDEO
In a disturbing incident reported from Juni (Old Dombivli), two women were allegedly assaulted after a disagreement over language escalated into violence. The women, Geeta Chauhan (38) and Poonam Gupta, were returning home on a two-wheeler around 9:45 p.m. when they encountered three men blocking the entrance to their residential building, Ganesh Shraddha, located in Vishnu Nagar. Upon politely requesting the men to step aside with an “excuse me,” the situation took an unexpected turn. The men allegedly objected to the use of English, insisting that the women should have spoken in Marathi. What began as a verbal exchange reportedly spiraled into a physical altercation, during which both women were attacked. Notably, Gupta was carrying a nine-month-old baby at the time. The accused have been identified as Anil Pawar (40), Babasaheb Dabhale (41), and Ritesh Dabhale (22), who are said to be residents of the same locality.

As per information, Chauhan politely requested that they clear the gate, using the phrase “excuse me.” The use of English seemed to enrage the trio, who then proceeded to pull the women and the child off the scooter and beat them with sticks. A few women also joined the attackers. The entire incident was captured by a bystander on video and later shared on social media, showing the women struggling to defend themselves from the assault. Eyewitnesses noted that the attackers showed no concern for the baby, and the complainants emphasized that “excuse me” is a common courtesy, making the attackers’ reaction completely unjustified.
The victims have lodged a formal complaint at the Vishnu Nagar Police Station. A case has been filed under Sections 115(2), 352, and 324(4) of the Indian Penal Code, which pertain to intent to cause harm, assault, and voluntarily causing hurt.
A Senior Inspector of Vishnu Nagar police stated that his team is “investigating” the matter probing whether a past dispute led to the clash. The incident comes close on the heels of MNS workers assaulting bank staff over the use of non-Marathi languages.
