Mumbai woman loses Gold worth Rs.4 Lakh after booking cleaning service via No Broker App
A Mumbai woman, Leena Mhatre, 55, lost gold ornaments valued at ₹4 lakh after hiring cleaners through the No Broker app for Diwali. The theft occurred on October 21 at her residence in Rishikesh Society, Dahisar East, an upscale neighborhood in Mumbai.
Mhatre had booked the cleaning service through the app, and two cleaners arrived the next morning at 9 am. After they left, she discovered that her cupboard had been opened and her gold jewelry was missing. She promptly reported the incident to the Maharashtra Housing Board police.
Following an investigation, the police identified three suspects through CCTV footage. The primary suspect, 27-year-old Arbaz Khan, has been arrested, while the other two individuals, Santosh Omprakash Yadav and Sufiyan Nazeer Ahmad Soudar, are being questioned.
The No Broker app responded by blocking the IDs of all three suspects involved. Investigating officer Sandip Gorde emphasized that companies must conduct thorough background checks before hiring employees. He also advised residents to follow these steps when hiring domestic helpers to avoid potential security risks.
The police are currently investigating whether No Broker conducted proper background verification of the suspects before assigning them to Mhatre’s residence. According to regulations, all service employees, including cleaning staff, should undergo police verification before being hired. However, many people do not comply with this rule, which poses safety concerns.
This incident has raised questions regarding the responsibility of service platforms in verifying the staff they assign to customers’ homes.
