Mumbaikars Can Now Report Abandoned Vehicles Online, Says BMC
Citizens urged to share photos and location details to aid speedy removal of scrap vehicles clogging public roads
In a major move to ease traffic congestion and ensure smoother road movement, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (BMC) has launched a facility for citizens to report abandoned, broken, or scrapped vehicles lying on public roads. The civic body has appealed to residents to file complaints online via its official website https://www.mcgm.gov.in or by dialling 1916.
As part of a broader policy to clear road obstructions, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has taken the initiative to appoint external agencies tasked with identifying and removing abandoned vehicles across different zones of the city.
If Mumbaikars spot vehicles lying idle in poor condition for extended periods, they are encouraged to send a photo of the vehicle along with the Google location to the mobile numbers of the contractors assigned to their area. The zonal contacts are as follows:
- City Section: M/s Ifso Technology Private Limited – 7505123456
- Eastern Suburbs: M/s Raza Steel – 9819543092
- Western Suburbs: M/s Pradeep Trading Company – 8828896903
According to the BMC, once a complaint is received, a notice is issued to the vehicle owner, who must remove the vehicle within 72 hours. Failing that, the vehicle is towed and stored in the contractor’s yard, and if left unclaimed for 30 days, it is disposed of as per municipal regulations.
Vehicle owners can retrieve their vehicles by paying the applicable fine within 30 days, after which no claims will be entertained.
The administration has clarified that this initiative is not a punitive measure, but a necessary step to remove physical obstructions from roads and improve urban mobility. Regular enforcement drives are being conducted across the city by appointed contractors to keep Mumbai’s streets clear and accessible.
