Mumbai will soon see its second cable-stayed bridge at Reay Road. With 90 percent work being completed, the new bridge is set to be functional by November 2024.

The project is constructed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC) along with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The cost of this project is being pegged at Rs 175 crore.

The new bridge is set to be a state-of-the-art structure with four vehicular lanes and a separate footpath to ensure smooth pedestrian movement. It is being constructed along the lines of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The bridge will be 220 meters long and will have a separate footpath to ensure smooth pedestrian movement. The newly constructed structure will also have an aesthetic outlook along with selfie points that are being created at two ends of the bridge.

The structure will make sure that cars passing under the Eastern Freeway have vertical clearance without obstructing the traffic movement on the highway.

The old structure was demolished in 2022. The century-old British-era bridge was constructed in 1911 with black basalt stones that were majorly used for civil engineering works during that era. These bridges are now deteriorating due to increased traffic load on the bridge and the structure corroding.

As a result, authorities mooted the idea of reconstructing the bridge.
