Mumbai's First Cable-Stayed Road Overbridge to Roll Out Soon at Reay Road Station
The six-lane bridge, complete with pedestrian footpaths, is set to transform traffic flow and enhance Mumbai’s infrastructure.
Mumbai has achieved a major milestone with the completion of its first-ever cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road Station. The bridge, part of a citywide initiative to modernize aging infrastructure, took just two years to construct, beginning on February 14, 2022.
This six-lane structure includes dedicated pedestrian pathways and is designed to support smooth traffic flow under the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass. It also ensures the required vertical clearance for vehicles passing under the Eastern Freeway, adhering to Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.
Highlights of the Reay Road Overbridge
• Aesthetic Appeal: Equipped with architectural LED lighting, the bridge enhances Mumbai’s skyline while respecting the heritage of its surroundings.
• Safety and Durability: A bridge health monitoring system ensures long-term safety and maintenance.
• Fast Construction: Built adjacent to the old British-era bridge, this project avoided major disruptions to traffic during construction.
Part of a Larger Modernization Effort
The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) undertook the project in collaboration with the BMC and Railways to replace Mumbai’s century-old bridges. Similar construction is ongoing at Byculla, Dadar, and Ghatkopar, signaling a comprehensive upgrade of the city’s transport network.
Set to be commissioned soon, the Reay Road Bridge is more than a functional structure, it’s a symbol of Mumbai’s stride toward a modern, efficient, and visually appealing urban future.
