Mumbai is on the cusp of a major green transformation. In a landmark move, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced that it will take on the responsibility of developing and maintaining a vast 130-acre public garden and promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road. The project, which will be carried out through Reliance Foundation as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, was unveiled during RIL’s 48th Annual General Meeting.
Set against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea, the “Coastal Road Gardens” will bring a breath of fresh air to the city—literally and figuratively. The reclaimed stretch of land, measuring around 53 hectares, will be turned into a lush, landscaped space complete with tree-lined walkways, cycling tracks, scenic plazas, and vibrant gardens filled with native flora. Designed as a space for recreation, reflection, and community gatherings, this green ribbon promises to become Mumbai’s newest and most cherished public escape.

This isn’t just a beautification project—it’s a legacy in the making. The development of the Coastal Road Gardens is being envisioned as a meaningful blend of modern urban planning and environmental care. It reflects a commitment to giving back to the city, creating a space where people can unwind, reconnect with nature, and enjoy panoramic views of the sea. Whether it’s a morning walk, an evening ride, or simply sitting by the water to watch the sun dip below the horizon, the space is designed to offer something for every Mumbaikar.
Reliance Foundation’s chairperson spoke of the project with heartfelt passion, calling it a personal mission to nurture a healthier, greener city. The initiative is being framed not just as an urban development project, but as a “green lung” for generations to come—a space that balances growth with preservation, and ambition with care.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which originally intended to handle the development on its own, had to reconsider after costs escalated to over ₹400 crore. Eventually, an expression of interest was floated, inviting firms to take over the project under CSR. Reliance was the only one to meet all the criteria, and is now in the process of finalizing its agreement with the BMC. Once signed, a detailed plan will be submitted outlining the layout, infrastructure, plant species, and public amenities.
Construction is expected to take at least a year and a half. Beyond the garden itself, Reliance will also be responsible for the upkeep of the newly opened 5.5-kilometre-long promenade developed by the BMC, ensuring both beauty and functionality are maintained over time.
This ambitious undertaking is part of Reliance Foundation’s broader efforts, which have already reached more than 87 million people across India. From education and healthcare to rural development and sustainability, the foundation has built a reputation for impactful, grassroots work. Now, with the Coastal Road Gardens, it brings that same vision to Mumbai’s western waterfront—transforming reclaimed land into a landmark of pride, peace, and greenery.
