Munnar’s temperatures have fallen below freezing, transforming the hill station into a picturesque winter wonderland. Several areas are experiencing snowfall, which is thrilling for visitors. The lower section of the Chenduvarai Estate recorded temperatures below zero degrees Celsius early on December 25.
In popular tourist destinations like Chenduvarai, Thenmala, Lakshmi Estate, Chittuvara, Nayamakadu, and Lakkad, temperatures dropped to around zero degrees. Meanwhile, Munnar Town, Nallathanni, Mattupetti, and Kundala recorded temperatures of two degrees. The lowest temperature of the season was noted just yesterday, and it’s expected to decrease even further in the coming days. A few days ago, Munnar’s temperature had already dropped to five degrees. Although nights are extremely cold, daytime temperatures are milder, reaching around 22 degrees. As a result, tourists are flocking to Munnar to enjoy the chilly weather and the stunning scenery.
Here are some specific activities to enjoy the winter climate in Munnar:
1) Visit the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, known as one of the highest tea plantations globally, to immerse yourself in the natural frosty beauty. Consider hiring a guide for a better understanding of the area.
2) Experience trekking at Meesapulimala near the Chokramudi Peak. Ensure you wear suitable clothing, sturdy boots, and be prepared for encounters with leeches (sprinkling powdered salt on them can help).
3) For a snowy picnic setting, head to Devikulam, a hill station close to Munnar, with a serene lake named after Sita, surrounded by snow-covered hills.
4) Explore the elusive Nilgiri Tahr at Eravikulam National Park. The picturesque rolling hills and pristine surroundings are breathtaking during the winter.
5) Seeking winter adventure? Opt for a jeep safari in Kolukkumalai, Chinnakanal, Mattupetty, or Mankulam. It’s advisable to book in advance as winter sees a rise in demand for these experiences.
